  • It is a user-friendly tool with a lot of features that are easy to handle even for a first-time user.
  • Instances are automated and do not need manual intervention using the tenant.
  • It performs various kinds of analysis like dependency checking, prerequisite checking by looking for existing data in the tenant before jumping to the performance of OX migration and also does diff analysis.
  • It helps in the migration of instances and simplifies the process altogether in a very easier manner.
  • OX can be used to perform either a single instance migration a package of instances through the creation of a configuration package. But considering the 45-minute hard time-out, it is always better to large or complex objects in smaller batches. If there are other loads going on within the tenant, it may also affect the performance of the OX. So, it is essential to be mindful of the other processes in the tenant and take into consideration the time-outs met during migration so that the configuration packages can be broken down into smaller ones for the next time.

Performing a Single Instance Migration

For accessing object transporter, creation of a user-based security group is a mandatory process. Workday recommends that you name it as Migration Administrator. After the creation of this group, it is to be added to the special OX services or into the domains for non-implementers for creating respective policies for both. First click on launch object migration, select your target tenant and click start. After signing in into your target tenant, take a diff report if necessary or proceed to merge the new object directly as long as there are no collisions. Choose the save option to begin loading the instance into the targeted tenant. The message, ‘Process completed successfully’ will appear if there are no errors. You can view all the dependent objects of the instance by clicking on the folder.

Details regarding the parent object and dependent objects will be displayed in the expanded view of the folder. Information regarding repot definition and configuration values will also be displayed in the source and the target tenants. To analyze using diff reports, you can click on any dependent objects and make the analysis. If there are significant differences, go back to the source tenant to resolve such differences. Object will be available in the destination tenant if the migration is successful.

Creation and Migration of Configuration Packages for Migration

If there are other loading processes being performed in the tenant or if you encounter a time-out in the middle of a migration, it is always advisable to break larger configuration packages into smaller ones.  In a single configuration package, you can transfer a group of about 100 objects. You can add one or more implementation types to the package by using the option, ‘add implementation type’.

After selecting the implementation type, you can edit and filter the implementation rules if necessary by specifying conditions. You can change instances for an implementation type and filter it based on condition rules. After making the desired changes, you can save the configuration package and prepare for migrating it.

The first few steps in migration are the same as migrating instances. But in this case, you can make changes after viewing the contents of the configuration package or view diff for objects. If there are differences in values between source and target tenants, return to the source tenant to resolve those issues before opting to migrate again.

After selecting the ‘migrate’ option, you will be able to review any differences before migrating or merging the values between tenants. In the end, you can submit the package to finalize and migrate it to the tenant of your choice. If the process is successful, the migrated objects will be visible in the target tenant in no time.  It is essential to remember that object transporter cannot migrate transactional or reference data. It can transfer only the objects, their instances and dependencies.

Also, migration should not be performed between preview and non-preview tenants since there is a high risk of varied differences existent in web services and data models between such tenants.
